Square

90° · Tension · Orb: 6–10°

The square is the most dynamic aspect in astrology. At 90°, two planets are in signs that share the same modality (both cardinal, both fixed, or both mutable) but differ in element — creating a fundamental conflict between two equally strong drives. Neither planet will yield to the other, and the native must find a way to honor both.

Traditional astrology classified the square as malefic — an aspect of difficulty, frustration, and obstacle. This is not wrong, but it is incomplete. Squares are where the growth happens. The easy aspects (trines and sextiles) give you what you already have. Squares give you what you need to develop. Every significant achievement in a life is built on the back of a square somewhere in the chart.

The nature of the conflict depends on the modality. Cardinal squares create crises of action — two different directions pulling simultaneously, forcing a choice. Fixed squares create crises of persistence — two immovable forces grinding against each other, building enormous pressure. Mutable squares create crises of adaptation — too many options, too much flexibility, difficulty committing to any single path.

In the planetary cycle, the square represents the first major crisis point after the conjunction. The seed has been planted, the early growth has occurred, and now the first real obstacle appears. The waxing square (first quarter) demands action — push through or abandon the project. The waning square (last quarter) demands release — let go of what is no longer working.

People with many squares in their charts are not cursed — they are equipped for a life of significant accomplishment through struggle. The challenge is learning that the friction is the fuel, not the enemy.

How to Interpret

Identify the two planets and the houses they occupy. The square creates a conflict between these life areas that cannot be resolved by choosing one over the other — both must be integrated. The sign modality (cardinal/fixed/mutable) tells you the nature of the tension. The native will feel this aspect as an internal push-pull that forces growth.

Examples

Sun square Moon: Core identity conflicts with emotional needs. What you want and what you feel pull in different directions. Inner tension that drives personal development.

Venus square Mars: Desire conflicts with love. Passionate but turbulent relationships. Creative tension that produces intense art or intense arguments.

Moon square Saturn: Emotional needs meet restriction. Difficulty expressing vulnerability. Childhood may have required premature emotional self-sufficiency.

Mercury square Neptune: Logical mind conflicts with imagination. Brilliant creative thinking alongside confusion, miscommunication, and difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction.
