The seventh house sits directly opposite the first, on the western horizon — the descendant. If the first house is "I," the seventh house is "You." This is the house of partnership in all its forms: marriage, business partnerships, and any significant one-to-one relationship where two people must negotiate their differences.

Marriage and committed partnership are the primary seventh house signification. The sign on the descendant describes the qualities you seek in a partner — often qualities you have not developed in yourself. Aries rising (Libra descending) seeks partnership with someone decisive and diplomatic. Scorpio rising (Taurus descending) needs stability and sensuality in a partner.

Open enemies are also a seventh house matter — people who oppose you directly and openly. In traditional astrology, lawsuits and legal adversaries belonged here. The connection between partnership and enmity is not as strange as it seems: the seventh house represents anyone who stands face-to-face with you, whether in love or in conflict.

Contracts and agreements are seventh house territory. Any formal arrangement between two parties — marriage, business partnerships, legal agreements — is governed by this house. The condition of the seventh house and its ruler can indicate whether partnerships tend to be harmonious or contentious, supportive or draining.

Planets in the 7th House

Planets in the seventh house powerfully shape your experience of partnership. Venus here naturally attracts harmonious relationships. Saturn can delay marriage or attract older, more serious partners. Uranus brings sudden, unconventional relationships. Mars can indicate a combative dynamic.

Empty 7th House

An empty seventh house is extremely common and does not mean loneliness. It means partnership unfolds without being a primary area of crisis or intensity. The descendant sign still describes your partner archetype.
