Tiwaz
Tyr / Justice
About Tiwaz
Tiwaz is the rune of the god Tyr, the Norse god of war, justice, and honorable sacrifice. Tyr was the bravest of the gods — not because he was the strongest, but because he was willing to lose his hand to bind the wolf Fenrir and protect the world. Tiwaz represents this specific courage: the willingness to suffer personal loss for a greater good.
Upright Meaning
Justice, honor, and righteous sacrifice. Tiwaz is the rune of the god Tyr, who placed his hand in the mouth of the wolf Fenrir knowing he would lose it — because the binding of the wolf was necessary to protect the world. This is the rune of doing what is right regardless of personal cost. A legal matter resolves in your favor. A leader emerges. A sacrifice is required, and you are strong enough to make it.
Reversed Meaning
Injustice, cowardice, or sacrifice made for the wrong reasons. A legal matter goes against you, or you are asked to give up something that should not be surrendered. Reversed Tiwaz can also indicate a leader who has lost their moral compass — authority without integrity, power without honor.
