Electional Astrology: Choosing the Right Time

If natal astrology tells you who you are, and transits tell you what is happening to you, electional astrology tells you when to act. It is the branch of astrology concerned with choosing the most favorable moment to begin an important undertaking.

The Core Principle

The moment something begins shapes its entire life. A business launched at a particular moment carries the qualities of that election chart, just as a person carries the qualities of their birth chart.

Basic Rules

### 1. Strengthen the Ascendant

Choose a rising sign that supports your purpose. Business: earth signs for stability. Wedding: Venus-ruled signs. The ascendant ruler should be well-placed and free from affliction.

### 2. Fortify the Moon

The Moon is the most important planet in elections. Key rules:

Avoid Void-of-Course Moon (no applying aspects before sign change). Events begun here tend to come to nothing.
Favor applying trines and sextiles. Moon applying to trine Jupiter is excellent for growth.
Avoid hard aspects to malefics. Moon square Saturn is a red flag.

### 3. Support the Relevant House

Each undertaking corresponds to a house: 7th for marriage, 10th for career, 2nd for finances. The house ruler should be strong and well-aspected.

### 4. Avoid Retrogrades

Mercury retrograde brings communication breakdowns and contract issues. Venus retrograde complicates relationships. Mars retrograde depletes energy and misdirects effort.

### 5. Use Benefics, Avoid Malefics

Place Jupiter and Venus in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th). Keep Mars and Saturn away from angles unless their energy specifically serves the purpose.

The Deeper Teaching

Electional astrology teaches that timing matters. The same action at different moments produces different results. You cannot control the sky, but you can choose when to set sail.
