The Devil

The Devil sits on a half-cube (incomplete knowledge) with two figures chained before him — the same Lovers from card VI, now bound. But look closely: the chains around their necks are loose enough to lift over their heads. They could leave at any time. The inverted pentagram above The Devil's head represents material domination of spirit. This is the card of bondage that is chosen, not imposed — the addictions, attachments, and shadow patterns we maintain because they feel familiar.

Reversed Meaning

Releasing limiting beliefsExploring dark thoughtsDetachment

Reversed, The Devil indicates the beginning of release from self-imposed bondage. You are starting to see the chains for what they are: habits, not destiny. This is often an uncomfortable process — there is grief in releasing even the things that harm us, because they were ours. But the chains are already loosening.
